Basic Math - equation in standard form using only integers

Expert: Pawan Musale - 9/27/2009

Question
Is this correct for the following problem
x/8 = -4y/5
multiply everything by 40
40x = 160y or x = 4y

Answer
Brady,

x/8 = -4y/5

Multiplying both sides by 40 will give,

40 * x/8 = 40 * (-4y/5)

5x = 8*(-4y)   [On left side, 40 will get divided by 8 and on right side, 40 will get divided by 5]

5x = -32y

x = (-32/5)y

So this is the value of x.
I hope this helps.

Regards,
Pawan
