Question
This isn't exactly a math problem, but I hope you can help.

On baseballreference.com, the top 6 run scorers in baseball history are listed as Rickey Henderson, Ty Cobb, Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, and Pete Rose.

Hank Aaron and Babe Ruth each have 2174 runs scored, and Pete Rose is listed as 6th, with 2165 runs scored.

My question is since Aaron and Ruth are tied for fourth, then why is Rose listed as sixth? True, there are five people ahead of him, but two are tied. So wouldn't it make more sense to list Rose as being ranked 5th-highest run producer in baseball history, and not 6th?

Answer
Yes, to me it would make sense too, but that's not the way it works.  It has to do, as you said, the number of ppl ahead of him.  If there were 3 ppl tied for 1st, the next person listed wouldn't be second, they'd be 4th.  You can't say that Pete Rose is the 5th all time highest scorer because 5 ppl have scored higher than he did.  Make sense?
