Question
how do you find the value of x?

Answer
Well, without an actual problem to the solve, the basic answer is to isolate the x on one side of the equation by "undoing" everything that was done to it.  For example

4x + 3 = 11  subtract 3 from both sides
4x = 8   divide both sides by 4
x = 2
