Question
6+sqrt(2x+12)=x

Answer
6+sqrt(2x+12)=x
sqrt(2x+12)=x-6  square both sides
2x + 12 = x^2 -12x + 36 combine like terms
x^2 - 14x + 24 = 0  factor
(x-12)(x-2) = 0  set both parts = to 0
x-12 = 0 or x-2 = 0
x = 12 or x = 2  fill in 12 and 2 into the original equation.  the equation is true for x = 12, but not x = 2, so the answer is x = 12
