Question
A man's rent for one month was twice his food bill for the month. His food bill was 3 times his electric bill. Altogether his rent, food and electric were $200. How much was rent?

Answer
Hello, Brandi.

Make rent = x.

Therefore, food bill = 1/2x.

Electric bill = 1/3(1/2x), or 1/6x.

Therefore, x + 1/2x + 1/6x = $200.

Combine the x factors: 1 2/3x = $200.

Divide both sides by 1 2/3: x = $120.

Answer: Rent = $120.

Hope this helps. Please ask if you need clarification.

Regards,
John
