Question
I don't understand how 16/3 = 5 hours and 20 mins

A car travel on the freway at an average speed of 54 miles per hour. How long does it take to travel 288 miles

54 = 288/x  x = 288/54 =16/3 don't undersatnd how to make the fraction hours and minutes

Answer
Hello, Johnnie.

When you divide 288 by 54, you come up with 5.3333 (repeating), or 5 1/3 hours (5 hours, 20 minutes). This may be converted to 16/3 hours, but it need not to answer the problem.

16/3 is merely a fraction. If you had 16/1 hours, this would be equivalent to 16 hours. 16/2 hours is equivalent to 8 hours, and 16/3 is equivalent to 5.33333 hours. Division simplifies the fraction into a decimal (3 divided into 16 equals 5.33333 hours).

Hope this helps.

Regards,
John
