Question
hi, this question ia about the rules of exponents.

What is the difference between:
3X^2  and (3X)2

Thanks in advance.

Answer
Hi Ang-sui,

The first one reads "three times x square".
You multiply (x^2) by a scalar value, which is 3 here.

The second one reads "three x all square".
You square (3x) and thus obtain 9x^2.
Whereas, in the previous expression, you have 3x^2.

In general, (ax)^n is the same as a^n * x^n.

Expertise

When I work through problems, I like to emphasize concepts which I believe are worth noting. I will try to answer questions in the following areas, but not at the advanced level. Algebra. Sequences & Series. Trigonometry. Functions & Graphs. Coordinate Geometry. Quadratic Polynomials. Exponential & Logarithms. Basic Calculus. Probability, Permutation and Combination. Mathematical Induction. Complex numbers. Physics problems.

Experience

I have worked as a teaching assistant in college. My hope is that more people will share knowledge without boundary, give help without seeking recognition or monetary rewards.
