Question
I need your help.If it takes 50 eggs to bake 90 cakes using a large commercial bakery's recipe.using the same recipe,how many eggs will be needed to bake 400 cakes? a. 175 b.200 c. 222 d. 720

Answer
Hi Stan,

This problem is solved using a technique called cross-multiplication. We translate the statements into a mathematical expression of equal proportions.

The ratio doesn't change....since "50 eggs make 90 cakes", we maintain that "X eggs make 400 cakes". The question is, what is X? X represents the number of eggs needed to bake 400 cakes.

We have 50/90 = X/400.
Multiplying both sides of the equation by 400 gives 400*(50/90)=X. Thus, X=(400*5)/9 =2000/9.

This works out as 222.222. Rounding the answer to the nearest integer, "c" is the correct answer.

Cheers:)
