if a single letter is drawn from the set m,a,t,h what is the probability that the letter drawn is a memeber of the set m,a,t,h,e,i,c?  the answer is 1 but how do you get that

an ordinary deck of 52 playing cards the determine the probability ?  a face card is drawn.   4/13 how do you get that

a non-face card or a card showing a 5 . 9/13 how do get that

each leter of the alphabet is carefully printed on a pieces of paper form a bowl.  an individaul pieces is selected. the letter is consonant?  the letter is formed form straight line segments only?   the letter has ab enclosed region in its representation?
Answer -
Hi Veronica,

if we pick a letter form the set A={m,a,t,h}, then, it is with 100% certainty that we have picked a letter from the set B={m,a,t,h,e,i,c}, since all elements in A are contained in the superset B.

the face cards refer to J,Q,K or A.
there are four suits. so we have
SpadeJ,SpadeQ,SpadeK,SpadeA
HeartJ,HeartQ,HeartK,HeartA
ClubJ,ClubQ,ClubK,ClubA
DiamondJ,DiamondQ,DiamondK,DiamondA
to pick one of these out of a deck of 52, we have a chance of 16/52, which simplifies to 4/13.

rather than listing them here, best thing for you to do is to look at a deck of cards. basically, for each suit, the numbers 2-9 inclusive all satisfy this criteria.
multiply by 4 and you get 9*4=36.
This divided by 52 gives the ratio 9/13

sorry, i got to go.

Answer
there are 5 vowels and 21 consonants.
(i) prob = 21/26
(ii) not really sure what you mean, but similar considerations i guess. why don't you write down the alphabets on paper.
letters with straight segment include
B,D,E,etc.
count how many there are and divide by 26. that's the answer.

(iii) "ab enclosed region"...i can't possibly understand what that means.

Expertise

When I work through problems, I like to emphasize concepts which I believe are worth noting. I will try to answer questions in the following areas, but not at the advanced level. Algebra. Sequences & Series. Trigonometry. Functions & Graphs. Coordinate Geometry. Quadratic Polynomials. Exponential & Logarithms. Basic Calculus. Probability, Permutation and Combination. Mathematical Induction. Complex numbers. Physics problems.

Experience

I have worked as a teaching assistant in college. My hope is that more people will share knowledge without boundary, give help without seeking recognition or monetary rewards.
