Question
dear mr. mantell,
i have been searching many sites to help me with the y-intercept formula and i went to purple math and they gave me this example, it was very helpful but i was wondering if you could go through each step to tell me what is going on.

y=mx+b
1. 2=(-2/3)(1)+b
2. 2=-2/3+b
3. 2+2/3=b
4. 6/3+2/3=b
5. b=8/3

Answer
Hello Tiffani,

This example shows a line with a slope of -2/3, which
contains the point (1,2).
1. substituted x=1 and y=2
2. simplified (-2/3)(1)
3. added 2/3 to both sides
4. common denominator
5. b=8/3, which is the y-intercept.

OK?
