Basketball Instruction - Boxing Out

Expert: Bret Temple - 1/19/2008

Question
Bret,
I was told during a game that after a player establishes position for a rebound (in-contact with the player he is boxing out) he is not allowed to move backwards.  I understand if he is holding that would be illegal but I have always taught that you could back a player out.  Thanks for the help.

Answer
Hi Rollie,

YOu can back a player out, just like you can back up a player while your on offense in the low post, as long as the defender, or the player your boxing out is allowing you to move him. If both you and the other player are stationary, and then you suddenly use your body to jolt him out of the way, you might be called for a foul. It would be the same call as a "push". I hope that helps.
