Basketball Instruction - Boxing out

Expert: Bret Temple - 1/7/2008

Question
Dear Bret,
How aggressive can a player be when boxing out for a rebound? What are the rules on establishing position?
Can your hands be out as long as your elbows are still against the body? Theank you for your help.
Sincerely,
Ezra

Answer
Hi Ezra,

You can be very aggressive when boxing out. The only thing you cannot do is push off of another player to gain position or push off when trying to rebound the ball. You can put your arms out, or up, and you don't even have to keep your elblows in.  Boxing out is one of the more phyiscal activities in a basketball game, as well as posting up a player in the low post. I hope that helps.
