Basketball Instruction - What is the call?

Expert: Bret Temple - 1/23/2008

Question
Player A is dribbling at the top of the key.  He picks ball up to pass. Player B fakes coming to the ball and does a backcourt cut. Player A throws the ball where he thought player B would be prior to the back door cut.  Player A runs down and retrieves his pass before it goes out of bounds.  What is the correct call for Player A if any??

Answer
Aaron,

the call should be traveling, although I have seen very similar scenarios where the official doesn't make the call.  You cannot pass to yourself. Now, if player A fumbles the ball, then player A is allowed to retrieve it. If the Official feels Player A's intentions were to pass the ball, and no teamate was there to receive the pass, player A cannot retrieve the ball. I hope that helps.
