Basketball Instruction - Offensive basket interference

Expert: Bret Temple - 11/19/2008

Question
If the ball is through the cylinder (rim) but not yet through the net and an offensive player touches the net, is it basket interference?

Answer
Hi Doug,

The answer to your question is absolutely YES. Once the ball is even over the rim, (doesn't even have to be on or touching the rim) nobody may touch it. If the offense touches it, it's offensive interference. If a defensive player touches it, it's goal tending, and hence, score the basket. If the ball is literally inside the cylinder and the offensive team touches it, there is no doubt it's interference. I hope that helps.
