Basketball Instruction - being fouled after the shot

Expert: Bret Temple - 12/12/2008

Question
If a player on Team A takes a jump shot, and is fouled after the shot and the shot goes in, is it Team A's ball out of bounds or Team B's. It was Team B's 4th team foul.

Answer
Hi Henry,

If a player on Team A was fouled after the shot, the basket would count, and Team A would be given the ball back out of bounds. This doesn't happen to often. It normally happens when a player is taking a shot, and a defender is running towards the player taking the shot to block it and jumps in the air. Their momentum carries them too far and hits the offensive player taking the shot and fouls them long after the ball has been released. The basket is good if it goes in and the offensive team just gets possession of the ball back. I hope that helps.
