Basketball Instruction - Basketball IQ and Evaluating Talent

Expert: Jared Barber - 4/28/2008

Question
Hope all is well.

I have a couple of questions.

1. During the movie "Hoop Dreams" Coach Booby Knight said "that very few basketball players at any level [NBA included] really know the game". In the year 2008 how would u rate the the basketball IQ of the average player at all levels NBA included and why?   The number 10 would be maximum knowledge and number 1 would be no idea what's going on.
2. Whenever I talk to high school and college players most seem to have delusions about their basketball skills. What is the best way to prove to someone that their game needs work if they ate to compete at the level they so desire?

3. The NFL uses The NFL Combine and Pro Days to evaluate a college player's football skills and athleticism. What methods [drills personality test, etc] do u use evaluate a player's talent short of just watching them play?

Answer
1 the IQ level is not very high in The college ranks and NBA i would say a 5 at best but there are some that have 10 or 9 but most and a average is a 5 or 6

2 Beat them in a game and school them i beat a couple of my players on last week cause they thought they were good enough ( i am 6'11)

3 RUN ,DEFENSE ,SHOOTING,PASSING AND DRIBBLING and personality test
-run i make them sprint for 5 min and jog 2 sprint 5 run 2 about 4 more times
-defense- my team plays zone and man the centers and forwards  guard me and the guards guard my assistant coach (which played in college for 3 years and the NBA developmental league for i year)and we play our best basketball together no body can beat us
-shooting-Full court shoot around in less than 1 min they have to score 25 baskets for guards 3 of the 25 has to be 3 pointers

PASSING- very important when we are practicing we pass the ball 5 times in a game unless we get an open shot

Dribbling there are so many drills we go divide the players up in two lines and  pass the ball back and forth for the full court and they make it 15 seconds very body does 10 suicides

Personality test to play on my team u have to have good character and if u act up in the classroom u get punished big time on the court all the players have all A's or B's
