Question I have a question about traveling. I have watched in the NBA, when a player goes from triple threat and goes to drive he gets called for a travel. He takes a step and then dribbles. I play in Highschool and i would just like to know is it traveling to take a step and then dribble and drive? I know its a travel when you take a step and then dribble after you pick up your pivot foot, but is it a travel when you take a step dribble then lift your pivot foot? Do you have to dribble before you take any steps?
Answer Hi Luke,
Technically when a player receives the ball, before he makes any move, he/she must put the ball down and dribble first no matter what. Now different officials call certain violations differently, and sometimes inconsistently, especially at the lower level. As far as the NBA, they let a lot of stuff go that gets called at the college level and below. But basically, always dribble before you make your first move.
