Basketball Instruction - Should i tryout with my finger broken?

Expert: Bret Temple - 9/22/2008

Question
want to tryout for my schools basketball team but i just recently broke my middle right finger, the hand i shoot with. I have mallet finger and i know i would've made the team if i didn't get the injury. I'm allowed to take off the splint probably around the time tryouts come. Should i just tape it up hard and play with it? If i injure it again i might have to get surgery. The problem is i'm a sophmore and next year i'll be a junior and they don't put juniors on jv and it will be really hard to make varsity next year.

Answer
Hi Luke,

I think this is a better question for your doctor. I wouldn't want to give you advice to try out, and then you injure yourself again. Talk to the doctor and your coach. Taping it up would probably do the job, but this is a medical question.
