Basketball Instruction - in-bounding

Expert: Bret Temple - 3/24/2009

Question
Bret,
Can a player in-bounding the ball, after a made basket or otherwise, step over the line, then step back out, then throw it in?
Thanks,
Paul

Answer
Hi Paul,

once a player has taken possession of the ball either after a made basket, or after the official has handed the in-bounder the ball, he/she may not step over the line then back out. It's an in-bounding Violation.

And just to add, the in-bounder may not hand the ball to a player in-bounds. The ball must be passed not handed, or it's also a violation. I thought I would mention that rule as well since I get asked about it a lot, and in youth leagues it's a very common call.
