QUESTION: If a player shots the ball and is fouled in the process, is the shot counted as an attempt?

ANSWER: You know Kevin,

That is a great question. The answer is yes, because of the "Continuation" concept. Even if a player is fouled while in the act of shooting, he/she can in fact have the shot count if it goes in, and it would be considered a shot attempt, and a made goal.

QUESTION: Let me ask you this then...if a player blocks another player's shot but is called for a foul, is the block still recorded as a block?

Hi Kevin,

To be honest, I'm not an official statistician, but I would have to say no it would not count as a blocked shot. In order for it to be legitimate shot block, no violation or foul can be committed concurrently with blocking the shot. It's simply a personal foul.

And I'm going to revise my last answer regarding the shot attempt while being fouled. I think there is more to it than my last answer. I'm going to research it the best I can and get back to you. The reason I say that, is lets say Player A shoots the ball from the perimeter and is fouled in the act of shooting and misses the shot. Why should that count against his/her Field goal percentage? So now I'm re-thinking my answer. I would venture to say that if it's a made basket, then it's a shot attempt, while if a player is fouled and misses, it is not. Thanks for the questions.
