Basketball Instruction/Basketball Self-Pass Off Backboard

Question
Hi,

Can you intentionally pass the ball to yourself off the backboard (not a shot attempt)?

I have seen people alley oop to themselves, so I assume it is OK as long as you pass/shoot in midair- but can I lose my dribble and intentionally tap the ball against the backboard to re-gain my dribble- or can I intentionally pass the ball off the backboard to get around a defender?

Are the rules different in high school / college / NBA?

Thank you so much!

Answer
HI Robert,

The answer to your question is yes. You can throw the ball off the backboard, catch it and shoot it or dunk it. When you throw the ball off the backboard, it's considered a shot attempt. In High school rules not only can you do that but you can catch your own air ball. NBA rules are different. I'm not sure if it's legal to throw the ball off the backboard in the NBA and then dunk it, but it is in High school rules and lower.
