Basketball Instruction/7th Grade Girls Basketball-struggling

Question
My daughter played in a mixed league with boys up to this point where she only would get a few touches (won hot shots for girls).  She made the girls middle school team and if she is able to get open and able to catch a pass, she looks as if she's looking for a boy to pass it to, instead of being one of the go-to people.  She doesn't know what to do.  Defense up to this point was only man-to-man and now they only play 2-1-2 zone and she doesn't know what to do there.  She's a little tall and plays forward.  Any recommendation for training aids, instruction, drills would be most appreciated.  I played some basketball but I'm at a loss how to help here.  Thanks in advance.

Answer
Hi Mike,

First of all here is a good free website that teaches fundamentals and drills for basketball. It covers shooting, ball handling, tips, plays, and drills. Just copy and paste it in your address bar.

I would suggest working with her in game like situations. How does she get open in the games? If it is by cutting off of a screen then simulate that and have her shoot the ball or drive to the basket. Have her work on the same situations she gets in games. With more practice she probably will gain more confidence. Make it as game like as possible. Don't let her jog or walk off of a screen, make her go game speed. Try and have her shoot over someone or a broom stick or something to simulate a defender. On the site there are is a good section on offensive moves with short video demonstration  Concerning the zone check out the site and there is a good section on zone defenses. It's hard to teach a zone defense without being there in person. Good luck and remember she is at that awkward age where she is still growing into her body and skills. Good luck!
