Question
I am a volunteer youth coach ages 6 and 7.  I have a instuction manual , however it does not list the names of the basic positions.  It only refers to the players as offense and defense. I would like to know the names of the positions. Can you help me?  I also would'nt mind basic responsiblities.

Thank you,

Answer
Hi Randy,

I think it is great that you are volunteering and working with children at such a young age. It's not easy because of there attention span. Keep it simple and fun. I believe that is the key for success.

Position's are referred to by names and ususally have a number the corresponds with the position. This number is ususally how the position is referrenced when you are reading books that are diagraming plays. Here they are:

Point Guard (1)
Shooting Guard or Off Guard (2)
Shooting Forward or Small Forward (3)
Power Forward or Post (4)
Center or Post (5)

When it comes to responsibilities as a coach for this age. I would say teach them fundamentals and fair play. Treat all players the same no matter who is better. Teach them the rules of the game and make it fun!
