Im no professional bball player, i just enjoy the sport. My question is, when an opponent cuts and drives towards the hoop for a layup, what is the best way to time and jump for the block? and how do you tell if they are faking a post up shot?
I agree that you must know the person, which hand he shoots, his favourite shot etc, any other advice on how to improve blocking?

Hi Bob,

As simple as your question sounds it is very difficult to answer. The reason is I have never taught a player to block a shot. We always teach to contest the shot and then close out hard so you give the shooter something to think about besides shooting the ball.

You are asking what the best way to time a block and to answer that you need to evaluate yourself first. Are you tall or short? Do you have good hops or just average? These are factors to take into consideration. IF you are tall and have good hops then I would say wait for the offensive player to commit and then you go for the block by getting a good angle on the player and then anticpate where the ball is going to be and go for the block. If you are short or dont have good hops then dont try and block shots, instead conmtest the shot by getting a hand up into the defender and then close out hard after he shoots.
