Basketball Instruction - offensive and defensive player position for free throws

Expert: Bret Temple - 6/20/2007

Question
in the restricted area there are four marked lines (in one side) for rebound players to position for rebound. can you please explain me out of which line first defensive player should position.

Answer
Hi Chaminda,

If you are refering to the lines that the players must stand in while someone is attempting free throws, the answer is the defensive team gets first position. Then you alternate offensive/defensive player every set of lines thereafter. The defensive player positions themselves between line 1 and 2 to begin. I hope that answers your question.
