I am a big fan of NBA basketball, especially its history, so I have pretty good knowledge of the past players, teams and stats.

You should have asked me 5 years ago. I was a real nut back then... :)

Basketball Trivia (general) - Lebron James vs. Michael Jordan

Expert: Borko Bariæ - 2/24/2005

Question
Do you think Lebron James will ever be as good as Michael Jordan?

Answer
As always, the questions of this type are not only difficult, but sometimes even impossible to answer. First of all, I would say LeBron probably reminds me more of a better-scoring Magic Johnson. Then you can ask a question wether Jordan was better player than Magic. Although most of the people would probably say yes, they did play different positions with totally different supporting cast, and in different eras. Plus, Magic played arguably more demanding position as a point guard.

LeBron James is obviously supremely talented and has probably reached nowhere near his top, and it isn't unlikely that he'll win a championship or more in the next decade or so. Maybe then the comparison will be easier to make.

But, in my humble opinion, the thing that separated Michael Jordan from the rest of the basketball deities was his extremely competitive nature, which has been unmatched since. He was able to literally will his team to unlikely victories simply because he wanted it that bad. No matter how fantastic LeBron may grow up to be, I don't see that in him.
So, he may become even better than Magic, maybe even surpass both of them in individual (possible) and team (less likely) success, but I don't believe he'll ever be the killer Jordan was.
