Question
When a team in the NBA goes over the foul limit, how many shots are automatically awarded to the other team when the other team incurs another non-shooting, non-techincal foul???

Also,

Is there any situation in the NBA where a player is awarded an additional freethrow attempt for making a free throw???

Thanks,
Paul B.

Answer
Hello Paul,

If it's a non-shooting foul and the fouling team is over the foul limit, two unconditional shots are assigned. If the foul was a shooting foul inside the three-point line, 2 shots are awarded as well. Up until some 10 years ago, two shots were always assigned for all the shooting fouls, regardless of distance. Now, if a shooting foul occured behind the three-point line, three free throws are awarded.

I din't think there ever were one-for-one free throws in the NBA, while FIBA used that rule also until some 10 years ago.

I hope this answered your question.
