I counted 1 square inch, 77 dots.

Surface Area of a Sphere = 4 pi r^2.



r=4.25

r^2=18.062

4pi = 12.56636

4 pi r^2=226.9798775

227 * 77 = 17479



227 square inches, * 77 dots per inch, = 17479.



Then subtract say 1000 for the stripes with no dots, excuse me, pebbling.  Giving us about 16500 on a regulation size 7 basketball.
