Question
how does the NBA set up the schedule for their referees and how far in advance do they know where they will be working?

I am sorry, but I am unable to answer your question fully. I looked everywhere for your answer, but I could not find it. I even went on nba.com, espn.com and referee.com and Ereferee.com, but to no avail.
I did find this interview with the two female referees of the NBA in which they said that they can not "disclose [their] assignments". Because of that, the NBA might not want to discuss their scheduling techniques if it is so secret.
