About Carol Antrim Expertise I can answer most questions about basketry techniques, and how to or where to find instructions/instructors. Also most questions about the materials used in basketry, either preparation and/or sources. I cannot answer questions regarding value or appraisal of baskets. Question I am trying to figure out if "triple twining" is the same as "triple weave" and "3-rod wale". Are they one and the same? I sure hope so, because I've tried 3-rod waling and love it--even the step up. I think? there's even a weave called "continuous 3-rod whaling, where you only have to step up one time, at the very end?
You can tell I'm pretty confused, right?
Also, I'm trying to learn how to weave on top of a gourd (as opposed to coiling), and I'm looking for instructions. How is tapestry weave done on a gourd--by using packing?
Whew! Such alot of questions! Thanks for any help you are able to give me.
Answer Dear Jana,
Sounds like you aren't nearly as confused as you think you are...you have triple twining/three rod wale/triple weave pegged right on. The continuous three rod wale is beautiful when done in colors...the colors spiral up the side of the basket if you have a number of spokes that can not be divided by 3.
You may not be able to find instructions for weaving on a gourd...that falls into the art basket classification instead of traditional americana, which are made for, or from, patterns. However if you watch the basket and gourd show schedules, some one like Marla Helton will be teaching those techniques. She's an inovative designer, a talented artist, and a great teacher.
