Basset Hound/Basset Hound

Question
Today my basset hound either slipped on some ice or landed wrong when jumping off of the sofa or car. She has been limping around all day. Any Suggestions?

Thanks,
Shea

Answer
Hi Shea,

Because of their build, it's never a good idea to let Basset's jump from anything.  They don't get the same cushion/balance as dogs with average sized legs.  If you want to allow her on the sofa, that's fine, but you'll need to either fashion a ramp/steps or pick her up and place her on the ground.

Your girl should be checked out by her veterinarian.  Because you aren't sure as to the cause of her injury, it's possible that she has hurt her back.  The vet may want to prescribe anti-inflammatories.

Aside from a possible back injury, she could have pulled or torn a tendon or muscle...which would also warrant veterinary attention.

If she were mine, I'd keep her as still as possible for the rest of the day and see if she was still limping tomorrow morning.  If so, take her in.
