Basset Hound/rubbing backside

Question
About 4 months ago my basset started rubbing her backside on the carpet, in circles.  Similar to the stanley steemer commercial about Toby.  It doesn't seem like she is having any trouble going to the bathroom.  Obviously, I'd rather her not do this. We only have carpet in the family room and she only does it there.  It is new and rather scratchy. Any suggestions?

Answer
The vet needs to check her for worms and/or an anal gland impaction.  Dogs tend to scoot to relieve an itch...if it's very occasionally it's not a big deal, however if she is doing it on a regular basis, chances are something is going on back there.  The most common causes being an anal gland impaction or worms.

If it is an anal gland impaction, left untreated it will turn into an infection for which meds will be needed.

Expertise

I will offer assistance to anyone needing help with general Basset Hound care, health and behavior/training. I do not, however, assist those who have bred their pet. If you are responsibly breeding, you shouldn't have simple questions as your mentor should be providing you all the instruction you need.

Experience

I currently own a 5 year old Basset Hound and his 6 non-basset siblings...(a mutt and 5 Boxers). I have studied dog behavior and training extensively and train my own dogs.

Education/Credentials
I was a certified obedience instructor and a certified potty-training instructor with Petsmart and studied under a canine behaviorist.
