Question
How did this stitch get it's name? What tribe is the creation of the stitch attributed to?  About when was the stitch brought to the U.S.?

Answer
Dear Charlene - I wish I could give you more information.  I just don't know the answer to your questions.  However, I have seen several references to the book "Creative Beadweaving", which may be able to give you the information you are seeking.

Also, Glass Cat Beads offers a class in African Helix, so you might be able to ask a question on their website:

Another teacher, Carol Cyhper, is associated with the Lapidary Journal and may be of some help.  I have sent an inquiry to her and will share it with you should I get a response.

I wish I could be more helpful with these very good questions.

Nanetta
