Question I bought some 1/8 thick leather lace and some pony beads. I want to make a native American necklace. However the beads are too loose and they slide around, I need something to hold them in place. I can't find crimp beads large enough anywhere in stores or online. I'm hoping you can give me some suggestions for keeping the beads in the positions I want them along the necklace. I'm also open for suggestions as to what I should use as a clasp to close the necklace off.
Thanks,
Beth
Answer Dear Beth - I do not work with these materials often and my first suggestion would be to cut your own lacing from leather. You would need leather scissors, which are very tough and sharp. Or look for lacing specifically designed for pony beads. Ask where you purchased the lacing. I have an idea which might work. I would suggest getting some waxed artificial sinew and knot it where you want the beads to be. Wrap it around the area to fill in the thickness, knot, cut and trim the sinew. Then slide the bead snugly over it. This would be a bit tricky in that you would need to experiment with the thickness. The wax makes it a bit sticky and it sticks nicely to itself. It also should hold the bead in place. If this makes it TOO thick, then try a leather/glass compatible glue.
Again, I would consult the supplier about findings recommended for finishing leather. If that is not possible, try Rio Grande or Fire Mountain jewelry supplies. And of course, Tandy Leather.
I can answer questions concerning design, peyote-primarily free-form, bead tips, supplies, bead embroidery, fringing, mixed media-including wire, polymer clay and fused glass. I can answer some historical questions. I cannot answer questions about patterns.
