Beagles/beagles and dog fights

Question
There is a beagle (unspayed female) next door. My dog (a shepherd mix) and
another neighborhood dog (a terrier) are roused to terrible fights by this
beagle, whether she is in heat or not. The other dog who lives in the backyard
with her (a chocolate lab) recently got her by the throat and almost killed her.
Then yesterday I had my dog at the dog park. She plays well with all sizes and
breeds. A beagle came on the scene after about an hour, and all the dogs
ganged up on him, had him flat on his back sniffing him, etc. then within 15
minutes several of the big dogs who had been playing happily with all the
other dogs ganged up on this beagle and probably would have killed him had
there not been people around. Is there something about beagles that
provokes this behaviour from other dogs?

Answer
Absolutely not, I think it just happens to be a coincidence. The fact that the one next door is unspayed tells all. Whether she is in heat or not the males want her. If she is in heat it is typical that they would fight over her. You should beg your neighbor to get her spayed so this stops. If your dog is unneutered, getting him fixed will also stop this. ALL DOGs should be fixed unless you are a certified breeder.

As far as the male beagle at the park, was that beagle fixed? Whether it is a male or female the hormones cause fights. The only purpose for a dog to have those pieces and parts is to mate and their drive will be high.

Beagles are very social dogs, they are pack animals, they are full of energy but mellow usually. They LOVE other dogs, beagles hate to be alone and a one of the quintessential family dogs. But remember it doesn't matter what the breed if not treated properly or trained properly.

Nothing you brought up fits in with the normal breed temperament or typical beagle.

Hi Janice, I just got your rating and I am baffled by what you said. No where in my response did I call your dog a he or him, nor did I say or infer anything about beages being a bad breed. This would be totally the opposite of my devotion to the breed. Also don't get = "Cliches and unthoughtful absolutism that shows no curiosity is not helpful"

I give of my time freely and try my best to give thoughtful and well thought out answers. It disturbs and confuses me that you would write something so unwarranted and negative on my ratings feedback and then give me the highest marks at the same time? Please explain this to me,

Beagles

Experience

I currently have one beagle, a male age 5, an 12 month old Pit Bull, and a 8 year old min. poodle. I have had to let go of three of my dogs, 2 beagles and 1 whippet/rat terrier mix in the past 5 years, most recently my whippet mix. The two beagles lived to 15 and the whippet mix to 13.5, it has been hard to say goodbye to them. I have done rescue work on and off for years as well as fund-raising for the local animal shelter. I worked for a dog magazine in the past (Southern California Dog Magazine). Being a psychotherapist has encouraged me to do in depth studying of animal behavior as well. I have worked with many people to help curb undesirable behaviors in their dogs (or them!) or to form good behaviors. My life is devoted to and surrounded by my dogs........The picture you see here is Zeppelin but we also call him the "miracle dog". He was hit by a car April 2010 while out with the dog walker and had very serious injuries... 4 surgeries and $17,000 later my boy is whole again and back to loving life. He is so special to me and he weathered a lot of pain and trauma yet is still the sweet boy he always was! I also work to stop Breed Specific Legislation and help to get pit bulls adopted.
