Question
What would be the single most important contribution The Beatles gave to music & society?

Their music came as a great change to the soft pop which had developed after about 1959. It was lively, a totally new sound (a combination of American-influenced soul music which was brought into the port of Liverpool on records which were unobtainable in the UK at the time, notably Motown) and their own singing & playing style.

Pop music needed something new, and this was *it*, promoted by the creative hand of Brian Epstein, their manager.

It was also quite new for artists to write their own songs, which of course they did VERY successfully!

There was something in Paul's voice when he sang the phrase "Love Me Do" at the end of the verses that told me everything in Pop was going to change, and it did! I left my first band (which I had founded), partly because the other members thought I was a bit weird to want to change our style to reflect that of the Beatles! As a rock musician, I appeared with them in the ABC Theatre in Blackpool, England in 1963, and my songwriting has always been influenced by theirs.
