Beatles, The/The Beatles Alone
Expert: Steve - 5/24/2007
QuestionHi,
I trying to put together a list of songs that the Beatles wrote while still in the band but eventually released as solo artists.
Almost "songs intended to have been Beatles songs!"
Tried Google searches and looked through a couple of books but can only find a couple of examples. Any ideas?
Thanks
Answer Heya Matthew
About 5 years ago, I planned on making a cd of songs that the solo Beatles put out, but were originally made for the band. I've still not gotten around to do that, but I do know a few of those songs:
John wanted to have "Cold Turkey" as a Beatle song, but the others were too horrified in having a song concerning kicking a heroin addiction in their catalogue (although "Why Don't We Do It In The Road" was OK?) - When George had left during the "Let It Be" sessions, Lennon was completely fine in adding Eric Clapton as the new guitarist and Billy Preston into becoming the tight-knit Beatles! (We all know that Lennon was done with the band at the time, so I guess anything could have been possible in trying to salvage some scraps in the group) Also, he wanted "Oh My Love" that was released on his first true album, and a song called "Child Of Nature" which eventually became "Jealous Guy".
Paul had "Teddy Boy" and "Junk" in his collection from the White Album sessions - They weren't great-great songs, so they were just in limbo until he put out his first solo album.
George had some songs also, with these being a par better than the Paul cuts (I feel). He had "The Ballad Of Sir Frankie Crisp", "All Things Must Pass", and "Not Guilty" ("Not Guilty" being from the White Album sessions, with Paul being the counsel in not allowing it to be included), not being released until 1979's self-titled LP.
SIDENOTE: there was a song from the White Album cuts that John threw together titled "The Happy Rishikesh Song". The melody of the song was completely pinched by George on that 1979 album for the hit song, "Blow Away". So I would include "Blow Away" as being a Beatle song, with John being the main contributer!
I hope this answers your question on songs that were written as still group members, but were released only after in the solo years.
Take care
Steve
