Ok,this might be bit of an oddball question,but I'm just wonder was it ever colour? Because sometimes it  looked almost black and other times blondish,I can also assume it was due to lighting ect So what was his actualy hair colour?

As far as I know, John Lennon never dyed his hair.  I'm also a person with a bit of red in my hair, so I know all too well the effects of odd lighting in photos.

Paul McCartney in recent years, however...that's a completely different story.
