QuestionHi Steve, Regarding this release. I understand this was withdrawn in the UK day of release. Does this also apply to other countries, I am asking as I have an Australian Stereo with all the other features specified on the UK release..I have been unable to find any information relating to this Aus release...Your thoughts would be appreciated..
Answer Heya Phil
I am not fully sure of why there was a withdrawal in the UK day of release. I never knew there was a problem.
It was released on Parlophone in both mono and stereo formats on Aug 5, 1966. It was then released here in the US on Aug.8, 1066 on Capitol Records (without "I'm Only Sleeping", "Doctor Robert" and "And Your Bird Can Sing" - As those three tracks were already included on the earlier "Yesterday and Today" compilation).
The single "Paperback Writer/Rain" was issued on that same day in the UK and US, when the LP was released.
There may had been some problems regarding technical issues, as Lennon and McCartney were very interested in tape loops, automatic double tracking and backmasking (this first occurred as Lennon claims he placed the reel to reel tape in backward while high on marijuana). There may had been political problems with the album, as Harrison attacks Harold Wilson and Edward Heath, who were the British Labor Prime Minister and Conservative Leader Of The Opposition, respectively. Harrison always wished to show his opinionated side, and he gets to do so for the first time. The government probably didn't look to highly on having a popular band such as the Beatles pointing out certain officials.
Phil, I will look into why it was withdrawn in the UK on the day of release. If I find anything, I will add to this.
Take care
Steve
