Question
What is mr lennon referring to when he says "2000 holes" is he ferreting to potholes in the road or is it a knock on the government in general?

Answer
Hi, Nick

Here's your answer: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/4623524.stm ... I quote:-

The song, considered to be one of The Beatles' finest, begins "I read the news today, oh boy" and was famously inspired by the copy of the Daily Mail, which included reports of the coroner's verdict on the death of Tara Browne.

The millionaire was killed in a car crash after driving at high speed through London. It led to the line: "He blew his mind out in a car, he didn't notice that the lights had changed."

A study showing that the streets of Blackburn had 4,000 potholes was also immortalised by the lyrics: "I read the news today, oh boy, 4,000 holes in Blackburn, Lancashire."

Paul McCartney added the middle section, including the line: "Found my way upstairs and had a smoke, somebody spoke and I went into a dream."

FYI, as far as 'knocks on the government in general' are concerned, perhaps the most famous is in "Taxman", where both main political leaders at the time are named: Mr.Wilson  (PM) & Mr.Heath (Opposition Leader).

Hope this helps,

Chalk.

There was something in Paul's voice when he sang the phrase "Love Me Do" at the end of the verses that told me everything in Pop was going to change, and it did! I left my first band (which I had founded), partly because the other members thought I was a bit weird to want to change our style to reflect that of the Beatles! As a rock musician, I appeared with them in the ABC Theatre in Blackpool, England in 1963, and my songwriting has always been influenced by theirs.
