Beer/When Homebrew goes bad

Question
Hello!
I had this debate with my father in-law, and would like to know from an expert:
How long can you keep homebrew for before it goes "bad"?  I was suggesting that homebrew, if stored in good conditions, can easily be kept for 3-4 years.  He was convinced that it is only good for 6 months or so, like store bought beer.  Any ideas?  Thanks!

Answer
If you are careful in the process, it can last several years without going "bad", just like store-bought beer, but I'm referring to being safe to drink (not taste). I've had some for 2 years that was ok.

For best taste, just like store-bought beer, it should be used within about 6 months. If kept for a long time, the yeast is no longer alive and eventually becomes stale.

Hope this helps!

Expertise

I have been brewing beer at home for more than 10 years. Would like to help other people get started. I can recommend equipment, methods, ingredients, and estimate what it would cost to get set up. I have travelled a lot in Europe, and have tried many kinds of beer.

Experience

More than ten years of home brewing.
