Beginner Investing/Help on being new

Question
I am new to investing. I have started investing online and watch CNBC when I can. The problem is that I do not understand hardly any of the terms that the anchors use. I also don't understand most strategies they speak of. Can you recommend a book or magazine that would help a newbie like my self? I want to understand what they talk about and how it applies to me and my future.

Thank you,
Diana

Answer
Diana,

There are two books that can really help a new investor.

One is "Investing for Dummies" and it is just like every other book in the "for Dummies" series, a good basic outline.

This book covers a lot of topics and despite its insulting title, it is a good read.

The other book which is extremely helpful is barron's "dictionary of finance and investment terms."  This is a handy guide that lists just about every specialized financial phrase and term.

William O'Neill is also a good author to look for if you want a more technically-focused approach to investing.

In addition to these books, you may find that reading a good newspaper like the new york times and wall street journal is very helpful.

I also like some of the financial blogs like this one:

Hope this helps, and remember that if you are trading online it is best to reduce your costs as much as possible.

We like this place:

many others also like scottrade or etrade.com

Best,

Steve
