Beginner Investing/Market Of Stocks Not A Stock Market

Question
Hello:

I often hear the adage that the stock market is a market of stocks not a stock market.
What does this adage or saying mean?

I thank you for your answer.

Answer
Thank you for your question!
I have not actually heard that before, but it does make a certain amount of sense to me. The stock market can be thought of as a market, or store, with many, many options ot choose from. I don't know the exact number, but with over 14,000 companies publicly traded on the major exchanges in the US Stock market, it is like choosing the product that is best for you in a whole array of choices. Hence the "Market of stocks" rather than stock market, which has the singular word stock and implies taking a single stock to market to sell.
I hope this makes some sense, its all I can provide! Please do not hesitate to follow up with me if I can be of any further service,

Sincerely,
