Question
I have bought a few stocks on Ameritrade.  Can I do the same for companies like Bertelsman an overseas company (as I understand it to be)?

Ameritrade should be able to tell you, which stocks are American Depositary Shares. You might want to try the free website of http://wfnn.info and there you can see the stocks by country. There are many reports that you can read over and learn about each country, and the stocks in those countries.
