Question
In August, I will be honeymooning on Ambergris Caye for one week.  We do not intend to do much traveling around Belize, but can you recommend sites in the surrounding area that are especially worth seeing?

Answer
At the very least you should go out and try some of the snorkelling that is available - Shark/Ray Alley, Hol Chan and the like.  Also, if you can swing it, see if you can get on a manatee watch.  This will take you over to the coast and into the mangrove swamp.

If you feel somewhat adventurous, you could go and take a day tour into the ruins located at Altun Ha (this is north of Belize City along the "old" Northern Highway - partway up to Maskall Village).  Not only will you see the ruins but there is a wonderful wood carver located along the road.

Best of luck and enjoy your time there.  I got married in Belize in December and had a wonderful time visiting old friends and seeing some "newer" areas of the country!

Best wishes,
