Belize - How do I get to San Ignacio?

Expert: Daniel Anton Toth - 4/22/2004

Question
Hello Daniel,

I would like to spend about 3-weeks in
San Ignacio.

I am unclear as how to get there.

Can you give me advise on the easiest way to transport myself there?

If it's by bus from the airport, then which
bus do I take and what are the times of that
route to and from San Ignacio? How long would it take to get there from BZC? How much would it cost in US-dollars? And how do I get to the bus termanial from the BZC-airport?
Do they have an express bus that goes there?
Is a taxi an option or is it too expensive and unsafe for a single female traveler?

I would like to be able to make smooth
connections with flight arrival and
departure times.
I am told it is very dangerous in BZC and
do not want to spend an evening there.
I would prefer to just head up into the hills.

Thank you so much for your time on this and
can really use your expert advise on how to get to San Ignacio safetly.
Sincerely,
Kate

Answer
Hi Kate-
I've always rented a car and have never taken a bus in Belize. So sorry I know nothing of bus routes and times. I reccomend perhaps calling or emailing a major hotel in Belize city such as the Raddison and ask them. Maybe make it seem like you might stay there. I have heard however that the bus is a great cultural experiance.
I believe it was about 1 1/2 hrs(could be a lttle less)from Belize city so yes, a cab would be expensive. It's a direct ride from Belize city to San Ignacio along the Western Highway so the bus would be pretty easy.
I wouldn't worry to much about the crime.I too was warned about Belize city but found no evidence in the two days I was there. There is however not a lot to do there. Three weeks seems like a long time to spend in San Ignacio. Not a heck of a lot there if your on foot. There's great jungles and Mayan ruins but nothing really within walking distance. Plenty of tours to book though. Just a note, the affordable motels are pretty shabby. If you want to stay in a nice place, expect to pay more than in the U.S. And there off the beaten path.
I would recommend taking a ferry to Ambergris for a least a day or two. Totally different experiance than the Cayo, almost like two trips in one.

Have fun,
Daniel
