Belize - safety, hotel, auto availabity in Belize

Expert: Shawn - 2/14/2003

Question
I recently saw roundtrip fares to Belize for $299 from Los Angeles, CA and am considering the trip.  I am assuming it is safe from leftist kidnapping rebels.  If I take the cheap flight, will I be able to find inexpensive lodging after I arrive instead of buying an expensive vacation package here?  I'm a single 51 yr. old male, not picky about accomodations and will likely be traveling alone.  Thanks, Barry Ames

Answer
My experiences in Belize are becoming somewhat outdated (its been 3 yrs since my last visit) but there are a number of inexpensive locally ownded accomodations that can be picked up fairly easy in Belize.

What I would suggest is contacting Blue Dolphin on Caye Caulker (www.belizeanthings.com I believe) and making direct inquiries to them about various accomodations (they do have a hostel out on Caye Caulker which was cheap and clean).

In San Ignacio there is Pacz Hotel (if it should still exist) that was run by Diane Zubricki and, of course, Martha's Guesthouse (my premium choice there - locally owned and operated).  Also the Venus Hotel was a good choice for many many years.
