Bermuda/Bermuda vacation in May
Expert: Michael - 4/9/2008
QuestionMy husband and I are cruising to Kings Wharf in Bermuda for our 25th anniversary (without our 5 kids!!)We have 2 days there. What do you recommend for this time of year to do there? I love the outdoors and we are both in good health. Can you moped to get around? Is the water too cold to snorkel? Any recommendations are appreciated.
Thanks.
AnswerHi Laurie,
Bermuda is an awesome destination. I think of May to be somewhat of a shoulder season. Not to fret.
For your two day visit I would recommend walking the Southshore beaches. You don’t need a moped for this, rather bus number 7. Get off at Warwick Long Bay and walk down the hillside to the seashore. It’s important to walk it in the direction I suggest as the walk down is easier than the climb up at Warwick Long. Walk the sand doon trails, cliff outcrops and alongside the various beaches. Some you will pass are Jobson’s Cove and Stonehole. You'll end up at the famed Horseshoe Bay. From there you can walk back up to the main road and catch your bus back or continue on to Hamilton to visit the Fort or enjoy some shopping or pubs.
Pubs are very big in Bermuda as they have a British Influence. Fabulous. Enjoy many. A favorite down your way in Sommers is The County Squire. Right on Ely’s Harbor.
Laurie, I would highly recommend an early bus to St. George for the day. The ferry also goes there from the dockyard, but you get to see more on the bus. The island is just beautiful. St. George is a quaint 300 year old village. Great for strolling and taking in what it used to be like. Much history here. Very old cottages, many pubs and colorful.
If you and your hub care to try a trail-ride look up Spicelands Riding Academy (bus no. 8). The horses are gentle and the ride takes you along some beaches too. A real hoot.
Call the department of tourism at (800-BERMUDA) and ask for the Handy Reference Map and Transportation guide. It will give you an excellent lay of the land. Ask them to toss in some other stuff for first time visitors. This package will put you over the top while you're readying for sleep. You'll love Bermuda.
One other item I’ll recommend …if you care for this type of thing rent a Blue Flag taxi. Maybe if you meet another couple on the ship and they are interested you could go together and split the cost. A 4 to 6 hour personalized tour of the island. Let him proudly show you his island. A Blue Flag taxi is trained for this. Comfortable and air conditioned.
Don't hesitate to write if you have any further questions. Linda and I love this gem.
Happy planning!
Michael
