Question
How much should I expect to pay to take a taxi for two to 9 mile beach, Hamilton, St. George? What is reasonable? Is the public transportation safe (Buses)?
What are some of the favorite foods to get while in Bermuda?

Answer
Hello Joanne,

I've had no negative experience with Bermuda buses, ferries or taxis.

Bermudians, as most folks around the world, appreciate respect and friendliness from visitors.  Traipsing around in wet bathing suits and sandy feet isn't the most polite way to travel on a bus or to visit a shop or restaurant.   So, be aware, cautious, and respectful and you should have no trouble.

Getting around safely is more a matter of being smart.  Wherever you travel. Leave the fine jewelry at home.  Don't travel with large amounts of cash and don't leave valuables out in the open.  (In other words, don't be a tempting target!)

From the airport, average taxi fares without tips are:
to Hamilton, $25; to St. George's, $15; to South Shore hotels, $30 and to Dockyard, $45.  A surcharge of 25 cents is added for each piece of luggage stored in the trunk or on the roof.  Fares are 25% higher between midnight and 6 AM and all day on Sunday and public holiday.  Depending on the traffic, the drive to Hamilton takes about 30 minutes and about an hour to Dockyard.  (From the publication: Destination Bermuda 2007/08.)  Tips are usually 10%.

Some of my favorite foods to enjoy while in Bermuda include Indian cuisine and the pizzas at Rustico (a restaurant in Flatts).  You might enjoy visiting The Hog Penny pub in Hamilton for a taste of Britain - Bermuda style.  Curried mussel pies, fish chowder with sherry pepper sauce and Bermuda onion dishes are a must.  And don't forget the rum cakes (buy these locally made treats at shops around Bermuda).  Speaking of rum, try some of the many specialty drinks available at many restaurants/bars then pick up some of your new favorite spirits at the duty-free shop to take home.  (My favorite is Bermuda Gold.)

Enjoy your trip!
