Question This is our first cruise to Bermuda. We are arriving in Kings wharf in late October. Should i expect to rent a bike or take a taxi to see what the island has to offer. Or will there be enough at kings wharf for us to do? Also i here through reading Internet articles that tourists are often robbed and assaulted in Bermuda is this true?
Here's the deal. King's Wharf is on the West end. Not representative of total Bermuda. Now that's my take. Others may differ. What I mean is that to get a nice feel for the island it should be considered to rent a Blue Flag taxi for four hours or a day. The day tour would take you to see everything worthwhile seeing. Southshore beaches, a spin through St. George, Hamilton, perhaps a simple ride down Harbour Road, Gibbs Hill Lighthouse ... If you met someone on the ship you might see if they would like to join you and split the cost.
A moped would be wonderful. They give you great mobility and freedom. Visit every beach you care to. stay as long as you like in St. George and watch the ferry schedule to put the bike on the ferry back to King's Wharf! It is a 40-45 minute moped ride, without stopping, to Hamilton. Then another 40 to St. George. This could be tough on your butt if you have lower back trouble or sitting problems. Otherwise, it is the nuts.
Bus passes for the day or three days is another option. However, you'll won't have the mobility that you will with a scooter. If you're in good shape, Min, this is the way to go. But you will definitely require a Handy Reference Map to navigate the tiny island just to find where you want to go. Call the Bermuda Department of Tourism (1.800.BERMUDA) and ask them to send you one.
Listen Mindi, Bermuda remains one of the safest islands in the world. Today, with drugs making there way onto the island you just shouldn't walk the back streets at night. This is something you wouldn't have need to do anyway. If you are lazing on a beach don't leave your pocket book out. Lock it in the bike! Nobody's going to walk up to you and hold a knife to you and demand your wallet.
It is simply not true that tourists "are often robbed and assaulted" in Bermuda. Don't believe it. Bermuda is a paradise and enjoys one of the highest standards of living in the world.
